Many people come to me to help them to get their dream job, whether this is to help them to make a career transition to another company or to start a business of their own.  The process I go through with these clients is extensive but they come out with a clear vision of what they want and how to attain their perfect job.  Here is a quick overview of the steps you can go through to help you define your dream job and how to attain it:

1.  First, consider what you like to do.  What skills do you have? What are you passionate about? What is your idea of the perfect work day?

If you don’t have the answers to these questions, then visualize yourself in your perfect job.  Where are you located? Outside? Inside? Are you doing detailed work?  Are you managing other people?  Are you on the phone? Writing? How does the day look? What are you wearing?

Sometimes you may not know what you want to do and you are just unhappy and feeling stuck where you are.  In this instance, consider hobbies, areas of interests that you are passionate about, or areas of interest that you used to be passionate about, looking back even as far back as when you were a child.

This step is extremely important because the key to landing your dream job is to truly define and explore all opportunities, dig deep and understand what drives you, what you are truly looking for in your new position and what you really want to be doing when you are working.

2.  Once you have a description, then you can create a resume catered to you, specifically outlining your skills and your focus of what you want.  Create a true vision for yourself; possibly create a vision board that has pictures that you emotionally connect with when you look at them.  The key is positive thinking.  Understanding that you are unique and there is no one like you.  You have skills that in combination with other skills are completely unique and authentic to you.  Customize your resume, or design your new business paying specific attention to these unique assets that you have.  Feel the new position, get excited about it and then look for the features of your dream position in jobs you apply to.

3.  Once you have completed this process you can then  write up a more specific job description of your perfect job, if you have one, or if you do not, then you can look for jobs that have the items you defined during this process.  Once you create the Dream Job Description, make sure to post it somewhere you can read it at least daily and to use it when reviewing job descriptions of jobs you are applying to, as well as to create your own position for yourself if you are going to be starting your own business.

A great book to use when starting the process of understanding and defining your dream job is What Color is Your Parachute Workbook.  This book is very useful in helping a person dig deep and define their skills and requirements for their perfect position in an abstract way.
