Manipulative and Body-based Methods » Bowen Technique

What does the Bowen Technique involve?

Bowen Therapy is a simple yet effective body balancing system. Through gentle moves on soft tissue at a series of key points on the body, it stimulates energy flow that releases tensionand empowers the body's own resources to naturally re-balance and heal itself. Touch is used in a unique way to other forms of hands-on therapy, and is applied briefly at specific points on the body. These careful rolling prompts encourage the body to address physical imbalances and heal injuries.

As a complementary treatment, Bowen therapy is used to enhance the benefits of other modalities. Homeopathy is found to be especially beneficial when used in conjunction with Bowen Therapy. However, if you plan to combine Bowen Therapy with any other modality, be sure to discuss an appropriate treatment schedule with your Bowen practitioner.

What one can expect during a treatment session?

A Bowen therapy session will usually last between 30 minutes and one hour. Patients are typically  fully clothed, although you may be asked to remove heavy or thick garments. During the session, the therapist may leave the room for periods of 2–5 minutes at a time. This allows your body to respond to the treatment and make the necessary changes before the practitioner commences with  the next sequence of moves.

What is the aim of Bowen Treatment?

The aim of the treatment is to address the patients’ specific complaint and to  establish a comprehensive profile of the health of the patient. So, the first consultation generally includes a discussion of medical history, history of any injuries, sleep patterns, stress levels and lifestyle changes. During and after treatment a patient may experience deep relaxation, a feeling that they can retain for days.

What can Bowen Therapy Treat?

Bowen can help a range of disorders

Bowen Practitioners balance the physical, mental and emotional planes of the body. Some conditions that have responded well to Bowen include:

•    Acute/Chronic Back Pain
•    Sports and accident injuries
•    Shoulder Pain/Frozen Shoulder
•    Stiff Neck, Sports Injuries, Sciatica
•    Stress disorders
•    Neck and head tension
•    Musculoskeletal pain and imbalance
•    Respiratory and asthma complaints
•    Acute and chronic fatigue
•    Stroke and Bed wetting
•    Digestive problems
•    Menstrual complaints
•    Facial Pain
•    Knee/Ankle problems
•    Hormonal disorders and Hyperactive disorder
•    Learning difficulties
•    Sciatica, Scoliosis, Carpal tunnel syndrome

Bowen is not an ongoing therapy

Recipients can expect substantial relief and significant recovery within three sessions. However, chronic or long-standing conditions may require additional treatments. Some clients have periodic Bowen therapy sessions to maintain body integrity and balance and to prevent the onset of problems.
