The Alliance has been fighting the Syndic for a century-and losing badly. Now its fleet is crippled and stranded in enemy territory. Their only hope is Captain John "Black Jack" Geary-a man who's emerged from a century-long hibernation to find he has been heroically idealized beyond belief. Now, he must live up to his own legend.

Customer Rating: Summary: Superb military sci-fi Comment: Our hero is at once, larger than life, but also very human with all the issues that carries. The story is well driven; the space combat is at just the right level of detail and there is a lot of it. The political maneuvering element is there and plays a role but is neatly woven into the story to never become an endless dissertation on politics.
And it's just fun.
Glad that Amazon pointed me to it with the ever present "Other people who bought this item also bought ..." Customer Rating: Summary: If he explains light speed time distortion one more time... Comment: I was really disappointed with this book. There were so many reviews claiming great character development, smart discussion of science, etc. The characters are very flat. Character development consists of Jack agonizing over whether he can live up to his legend, the ship captain beaming her confidence at him, and the co-president bitching to him about how she doesn't trust him. The co-president is particularly irritating because she is constantly asking to speak to him and then the conversation consists entirely of her bitching at him. The science discussion consists of him reminding us just about every page that because light takes time to travel, and events are occuring light-hours apart, the events they are observing now, happened, well hours ago. I enjoy a good series -- no need to look for another book for a while. But, I'm still desperately seeking an author like Iain M. Banks, Neal Stephenson, China Mieville, whose works are on Kindle. Customer Rating: Summary: Quite enjoyable Comment: I saw several recommendations in the science fiction discussion board for this book. I even paid full price for it. Book 2 in the series is next. Thanks for the recommendation. Now I have a whole new series to read. Customer Rating: Summary: Great fun! Comment: It's been quite a few years since I enjoyed a sci-fi book this much. (I think it was A Fire in the Deep, by Vernor Vinge). This is what Battlestar Galactica would be if you removed all the silliness. I quickly read the sequel, and I'm now waiting for delivery of volumes three and four in the series. Customer Rating: Summary: Writes like David Webber used to write Comment: I'll keep this short. This is the first "couldn't put it down" book I've read in a long time.
