Generally considered the first sound feature, this 1927 film is pretty much silent except for a few lines of dialogue and Al Jolson's songs. The story finds Jolson playing the son of a cantor who wants him to follow in his footsteps, but the singer prefers secular music. Except for its historical value, the film isn't all that interesting, though it is great to get a sense of why people considered Jolson to be a hugely exciting entertainer at the time. --Tom Keogh
Spotlight customer reviews:
Customer Rating: Summary: You ain't heard nothing yet. Comment: The disc of shorts is worth the price alone. But with the booklet and wonderful restored film and commentaries, just a great package. Customer Rating: Summary: awful movie, incredible extras Comment: The movie "The jazz Singer" would have been forgotten long ago had it not
been the first film to be released with some dialogue and songs. Don't
order the this for the film, order instead for the 3rd disc which is a
true gem. Vitaphone which was a subsidary of Warner Brothers filmed and
released short subjects of popular dance bands, singers and vaudeville
acts. The third disc contains about three and a half hours of beautifully
restored vitaphone short subjects. Many of these shorts haven't been seen
for years and we all owe a great deal of gratitude for the restoration of
these gems. They truly are worth far more than the film, and show us now a forgotten world when Americans packed vaudeville houses to see what was
then the most popular form of entertainment, just years before movies, the
depression and cultural changes ended it forever. Customer Rating: Summary: Vitaphone is like a vitamin Comment: Why is it worth buying this set of dvd's if you already have "the Jazz singer " which has been released numerous times? Just for the vitaphone shorts, the reason I bought it. These shorts alone are worth the cost of the set. If you want to see what vaudeville was really like this is the set for you. Some of the names you won't recognize, for obvious reasons but this is what was entertainment back then. I remember my father telling me about Van and Schenck and now I know what he was talking about. Van had a club in Brooklyn and my uncle belonged to it so seeing them on the screen gives me a different perspective and recognition. Customer Rating: Summary: Jazz Singer DVD Comment: Very timely delivery and the product was exactly as described. Very responsive vendor. The DVD is a must for anyone interested in Jolson. Mostly silent (with subtitles) except for the music. Customer Rating: Summary: IF YOU LOVE MOVIE MUSICALS DON'T RENOUNCE TO THIS BOX SET. Comment: I BELIEVE THIS IS ONE OF THE VERY BEST BOX SETS PRODUCED BY ANY AMERICAN FILM COMPANY. I SUGGEST WARNER BROS TO PRODUCE MORE OF THESE SETS OFFERING US, ALL THE MOVIE MUSICALS OF THE EARLY THIRTIES PROCEEDING AS THEY HAVE DONE WITH THIS EXTRAORDINARILY MARVELLOUS "JAZZ SINGER".
PLEASE WARNER BROS LISTEN TO ME AND MAKE MY DREAM COME TRUE. THANKS!
