The Scott's classic reel mower is light, maneuverable, and economical. The business end of this push reel mower is solid, sharp, and everything a reel mower should be, with five heat-treated, knife-sharp steel blades that can be adjusted for nine grass heights with very easy wheel tabs. With its 10-inch wheels, radial tires, and 20-inch cutting width, this mower should enable you to cross whatever terrain and reach whatever hard-to-access rogue patches of grass you desire. There's no soft cushion on the handle, which is too bad, but otherwise, the Scotts Classic is a durable, well-constructed, simple device.
Spotlight customer reviews:
Customer Rating: Summary: Great mower, good work out Comment: The mower works great, although you have to keep up with it. If the grass gets to long, it won't cut it. A great way to workout. Customer Rating: Summary: Bad factory adjustments Comment: I liked the whole idea of not paying for gasoline and not having to maintain a power mower. When this mower arrived, I found that the reel was adjusted so tight that it could not even be moved. The instructions said that it was properly adjusted by the factory. It wasn't and after considerable work on my part I managed to get it to work fairly well. It does take more effort to push this mower and I wouldn't advise someone to use it if they are not in good physical shape. Customer Rating: Summary: No Fuss Comment: My Scott's mower has proved to be a good purchase so far. I've used it several times over the last few months and have enjoyed using it. I originally purchased it so I could have the kids cut the lawn without worrying about them having an accident with my power mower. They now prefer using the Scott's over the power because it's quicker and lighter to handle than the power. I enjoy it for the exercise I get and the ability to use it during early or late times without bothering my neighbors. My only concern for the future use is the durability of the mower handle. The wing nut screws seem to loosen after awhile and need a turn here and there-but so far no big problem. The other rule that I've read before is you can't let the lawn get too long and try to bull through it-you can but it won't look good. In conclusion-good product-wanted to buy an American made mower but they did not get the positive reviews this one did! Customer Rating: Summary: Very good and highly recommended for a small lawn Comment: What can I say, this push reel mower uses no gas or electric and gets the job done for small lawns. It's kind of light also, so moving it around is not that big of a deal. The only two critiques I can give this mower is that the handle is a tad bit unsteady (no big deal as long as it holds up). And secondly, occasionally you get a blade of grass that does not get cut as low as the other blades (little bit of unevenness). But once again not that big of a deal because I pair this reel mower with an electric trimmer and an electric edger for the ultimate "Green" lawn. Customer Rating: Summary: An excellent choice. Comment: In moving into a home with a fairly small lawn and in attempting to go green as well as economize it seemed appropriate to look into a reel mower. There is no doubt that it takes a bit longer to cut grass versus a gas or electric mower but I must second the view voiced by others that there is an added satisfaction in doing it this way. Some extra elbow grease is certainly involved. One can see that fact as a drawback or as an opportunity to combine a necessary task with a bit of a workout (minus combustion engine fumes). Most people who walk by seem either curious or genuinely appreciative.
This particular reel mower has been very well received as evidenced by reviews across the board (within and without Amazon). Scotts is a solid company. The mower is not built to withstand being backed into with the family car but is definitely sturdy enough to do the job without any sense of flimsiness.
From an educational standpoint, I found that once-weekly cutting is necessary. Otherwise, you need to raise the blades to a higher cut and go back over with lower settings. If you have reached that stage of the grass being so long that it is lying flat get it cut with another mower first or else you will be discouraged trying unsuccessfully to cut it with this mower. In the absence of the 'vacuum' effect of a 'standard' mower that grass is not going to be cut by this machine and it will not be pretty.
