Editorial Reviews:

Instead of cartoon vignettes that chronicle adolescent fantasies of sex and drugs in the near future, this sequel to 1981's Heavy Metal follows but one story. On a distant planet, a fountain of eternal life has been locked away by a race of supposedly wise people, who have buried the only key deep in space. If found, the key will give directions to the planet, but will also drive the finder crazy--which is exactly what happens. On his way to the planet of youth, Tyler (voice of venerable character actor Michael Ironside) wipes out most of a space colony and kidnaps a sexy woman. His big mistake is that he doesn't kill the woman's sister, Julie (voice of B-movie actress Julie Strain), who then sets out on a mission of rescue and revenge. Created with an uneasy blend of computer and traditional cel animation, Heavy Metal 2000 is utterly predictable. Even the sex scenes are bland and politically correct, eschewing the joy of dirty sex in favor of glimpses of T&A and lots of violence and gore. Of course, one big reason for this movie is to supplement its heavy metal soundtrack, which includes Pantera, Monster Magnet, MDFMK, Insane Clown Posse, Billy Idol, and others. It's probably better to think of it more as a string of music videos than as a story. --Andy Spletzer

Summary: Not such a great example of Heavy Metal
Comment: I am a long-time subscriber of Heavy Metal (the magazine) and I believe that, along with many others, that the original Heavy Metal film was a much better display of the creativity of these kinds of artists.

This movie, while I do like, seemed just not on point. It is still worth a watch but...rent it before you decide to make the purchase.

Summary: Heavy Metal 2000
Comment: This film sharing the name of the 1981 classic "Heavy Metal" has solid animation and an old country western style plot in a sci-fi futuristic setting. This film is pretty graphic and hardcore, but the original "Heavy Metal" is better in my opinion.

Summary: OK Metal
Comment: Alright attempt to follow up of the Classic original. It was entertaining and the music was alright, but over all it was OK. It does not compare to the original.

Summary: Nothing like the original
Comment: I got this and the original after seeing the South Park tribute. The original was fantastic, but this was disappointing at best. Save your money and pass on this one.

Summary: A Space Oddity
Comment: The Good Things
*Great animation quality.
*Cool story with lots of action and violence.
*Plenty of sex and nudity.
*Still a strong theme of good vs evil.
*Michael Ironside makes a cool bad guy, as always.
*Good soundtrack.

The Bad Things
*Much more goofy than its predessor "Heavy Metal."
*Has only one story line, instead of multiple short stories. Could be seen as long and tedious.
*Main character seems ripped-off from the last film.
*Doesn't capture the rock culture as well as the last film.

Despite many shortcomings, I think this film is great fun. It doesn't have all the same elements as the first "Heavy Metal," but instead, is more like a blockbuster sci-fi film, with lots of action and violence and a straightforward storyline. If you enjoy such films, I would reccomend renting this.
