Customer Rating: Summary: Be aware of the pitfalls! Comment: This was a gift from my kids. I like my coffee! But . . .
Although it does grind the beans, there are several items to be aware of: 1)The grind process creates a light coating of coffee on your counter over a 1' radius. 2)There is a great deal of static buildup on the receiver cup. When you take off the lid - the static will cause more 'spillage' (You can, at times, see the ground coffee jump out of container as you remove the lid). 3)The grinder needs constant attention to making sure the beans are not jamming up. You need to use a wooden probe (chop stick, etc.) to move the beans around so the grind continues. 4)Grind time is a little slow.
I contacted B&D and their response to the static was "We never heard of this problem". I was very dissapointed in their customer "service". B & D's products do indeed seem to be getting more 'inexpensively' made (i.e. - disposable).
One note: I have found that if you grind the night or day before and then let the unit set, the static does lessen, which in turn reduces the scattering of coffee.
The grind itself is reasonable and the unit appears to work given the items noted above.
I would not recommend this to anyone serious about coffee. Customer Rating: Summary: Pass... Comment: The motor on my B&D grinder burned out after only 6 months of very light use (on average every two weeks), so needless to say, I won't be purchasing another B&D. In fact, many of their products seem to be below parr these days. Customer Rating: Summary: I've never seen the static electricity problem..... Comment: I am looking for one of these units for my sister and thus I started reading the reviews after finding the product available on Amazon. I have had my grinder for 14 months and use it about every four days and I have never had a problem with static. Sometimes (but almost never) a very fine small cloud of coffee dust comes out of top of the catch container, but it really does not make a mess. It just dissepates. I have no cracks or broken parts at all, I have never had a clog nor have I ever cleaned out the shoot beyond giving it a little tap at the end of the cycle. I don't get it. I love mine. Maybe mine is the "lemon" of the bunch, but in a good way.... Customer Rating: Summary: Ok performance until it broke. Comment: This Grinder lasted me a bit over a year grinding, on average, about 4 hoppers a week. Burr Grinders are not supposed to be cheap, and this product illustrates why. It feels a little chinzy; the parts mate, but not very convincingly~ when you've got the lid on or the hopped attached, or whatever, you don't get any reassuring click or tactile feeling that they're in the right place. Due to such fittings, coffee grounds would occasionally escape while grinding, but just a light dusting on the countertop. I'd say the knobs, etc feel like toys, except that any toy this flimsy would be trashed in a week. Still, for $30 I got a grinder that was less messy than a blade grinder and gave a reasonably fine grind. If it wasn't quite as fine or consistent as I would have liked.... it was $30. I wasn't even that concerned when one of the flanges broke off the bottom of the hopper because the thing still worked.
Until it didn't. I've never found B&D tools to perform all that well, so I don't know why I expected better from housewares. So I'm buying a new grinder, and spending about $80 in hopes of better performance and longevity. If I hadn't bought this one, I could have spent $110 to begin with and had a better product for the same money. My recomendation is to skip this step and just buy a decent one. Customer Rating: Summary: B & D Coffee Mill Comment: B & D coffee mill arrived in very good condition and has performed excellently.
