Summary: Get In Shape Without Going Ape...
Comment: Every September, I see them...the young fourteen and fifteen year old kids flocking to the gym with arms, chests, and thighs all measuring 12 inches around. They are the skinny kids - hoping to gain some muscle and maybe while they're at it, some esteem...some confidence...some inner power. I empathize with these kids because I was one of them. I had to make sure that I was looking at my teachers face forward when they took role, because if I didn't, I'd be marked absent.

When I first entered a "real gym", I was so intimidated. There were some really huge guys there and yeah, there were some serious idiots there who liked to intimidate the "newbies" but fortunately for me, I met a few of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet who literally took me under their wing and got me started on the right foot. One of the guys even presented me with a copy of this magazine. It looks nothing like it does now. It was an odd shape for a magazine...kind of small, really, and the only picture that was in color was the cover but it had some really "sound advice" for the beginner all of which I promptly ignored.

I made the mistake that if five sets brought good results than twenty sets would bring results 4x as fast. My new friends warned me about training too hard and too much, but I didn't listen. My ego just got in the way and if I could stress one thing to beginning, intermediate, and advanced bodybuilders it would be to just leave your ego at home. It has no place in the gym. Unfortunately, most bodybuilders did start off as skinny and weak and insecure and sometimes muscles create confidence, but a lot of those times those insecurities just get pushed down even farther and if you ever met an unhealed "roid monster" like I have, it's not a pretty sight. These are the guys who constantly have to prove themselves over and over and over again and eventually they drop away...sometimes literally.

I was headed in that direction myself. I got involved with steroids and I was just obsessed with building the "perfect body" but I had no idea what perfection really meant because I still saw myself as weak, as skinny, as afraid. And even though I acted all bad on the outside, inside I was trembling and afraid of life. I had a rather serious car accident while under the influence of "roid rage" and I almost lost my arm - not to mention my life in that accident. Did I learn from that situation? Unfortunately, not...I just got angry that I couldn't workout the way I wanted to. It took me many, man years of soul searching and inner "work" to actually heal those years of pain, sorrow, and tragedy. So, no...I may not look like Mr. Olympia but I gained something much more valuable than 20" arms and 30" thighs - I gained a new appreciation for the life I am living.

This magazine still offers pretty sound advice. Not like it used to, but it still is much better than its more popular competitor...uh, that would be Muscle and Fitness. But if you're reading this and you have this aching desire to be HUGE listen to me...take your time!

Eat right, train sensibly, make sure you get your sleep, develop intersts outside of the gym, stay away from any kind of "growth enhancing" drugs and and don't let your body become the source of your self-esteem. You are more than a body. You have a mind, a heart, a soul and if you work on these aspects as well as your physical appearance you will create something better than 20" biceps, you'll create a life that you'll fall in love with (in a good way) and that is infinitely better than standing on a cold stage with colored undies on and three coats of "Sudden Tan" dripping off your skin.

It's great to be in shape...just don't go ape.

Peace and Blessings,
john, 'the Light Coach'

Summary: Extraordinary.Very informative
Comment: It is the best magazine in the market. Very informative with tons of tips and productive routines. Information for all type of trainer, new, intermediate and pro. And a lot of information for natural trainers .
Ok, they have some "female pictorials", but the neccesary to appeal the magazine and don't see only men in shorts and swimwear.
If you are looking for a only one information bodybuilding magazine, that is the one

Summary: Amazing!
Comment: This magazine is amazing!! It keeps getting better and better, unlike all the other sell-out magazines such as Muscle & Fitness. It's a shame it doesn't have more readers! If you like the mag then pass it around, people work hard to put it together! A great buy!

Summary: Used to be good...
Comment: But over the last 10 years it has just become another "muscle" mag that uses T&A to prop up its "bodybuilders". I'm surprised its still around.
