Editorial Reviews:

This one’s a bit of a paradox: The do-it-yourselfer might pass by this compressor in favor of an oil-free, no-maintenance model, but it’s actually one of the best on the market for the homeowner, hobbyist and weekend warrior.

There are three factors that made us form this opinion. First, it’s the quietest compressor we’ve ever encountered. It’s a remarkable departure in a genre of tools that normally force you to suspend conversation while it’s cycling. The MAC700 puts out 80 decibels, according to the folks at Makita, and when you compare that to the 90 and up you get from most units, that’s practically a hum. So we like this for household use, especially in a basement shop.

Next on our list of pluses for the DIY-er is the low-amp draw, and with that, fewer trips to the breaker box and less chance of premature motor failure. The other feature that won us over is the easy-on-the-hand lever handle ball valve that saves your knuckles when you drain the tank. It’s also got a really fast cycle, so by the time you take a sip of water, you’re ready to work again.

It’s made like a champ, with a roll-bar handle that protects your investment, a cast-iron cylinder for durability and an oil sight glass that makes maintenance a breeze.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Summary: It is a nice compresssor but...
Comment: I like MAkitta as a brand name. I have tried different Makitta tools and I never had a problem . I have no problem with this air compressor also but I think I was wrong about the tank size. 2.6 is nothing if you want to use this compressor for cleaning or painting jobs. it dores not give you enough air. The air comes out strong and to the point but not enough to last with the same force for more than five minutes then it gets weaker and weaker!
The compressor has almost no noise. Quite, stable, well built. Remember to buy all the accessories to enjoy it cos' the comp comes with nothing!
Also remember to attatch the metal part(filter) to the side of the compressor. Nothing was mentioned in the manual about the filter or how to attach it to the comp. Good luck.

Summary: little giant
Comment: great little compressor, exceded my expectations. Put the Mac700 to the test with a 15guage porter cable finish nail gun. Now a 15g gun wont use the cfm a frameing nailer does but it uses a lot more than a brad nailer will. I shot 10 2" nails in a 2x4 before the compressor kicked on, kept going to something like 20 rapid fire shots and the mac700 kept up. I would think it would hold its own even with framing nailer.

This was more than I expected. It recovers quickly and you can hardly hear it running with ear plugs in. Should have had one years ago, great little rig. Mine came undamaged, and in 2 days.

Summary: GREAT BUY!
Comment: This compressor arrived with no damage and has been working great. It's quiet and has a quick recovery time, less than a minute from empty. I wouldn't want to carry this one too far, but it's quite compact and fits on the dolly with the rest of the tools, also it doesn't walk accross the room while it's pumping either. I would buy it again if it was stolen,(like the last one!)

Summary: Packing Problems Seem to be Fixed
Comment: I purchased this compressor from Amazon in September, 2008. The packing problems that many reviewers have detailed seem to have been fixed. The compressor was packaged in an inner cardboard box that was fitted to the shape of the compressor. The inner box fit tightly into an outer cardboard box, providing fairly good protection. I don't think the compressor could be damaged in this shipping configuration unless a relatively sharp object penetrated both the inner and outer layer of corrugated cardboard. While possible, I consider the odds of this happening during shipping relatively low.

I've only used the compressor for a few minutes, so I will not make any judgment on it's performance, except to say that it is relatively quiet. I'll be able to use it indoors without concern for noise.

Summary: Works perfectly for what I need
Comment: I love this compressor. It's super quiet, and fills up in no time. I use it for spraying KTM9 waterbased finish on my custom guitars. I only spray one guitar at a time so, the small capacity tank isn't a big deal. I spray for around 30 seconds (which is probably all I should be spraying at one), and then it kicks on for a few seconds. I keep spraying while it is on and don't have any issues. I'm only spraying for around 45 seconds total which is all I need.

The compressor is well built, and doesn't seem cheap at all. It comes with a universal quick disconnect which is nice. I'd recommend this compressor to anybody who needs a good, quiet compressor for small jobs.

I haven't used it for anything other than spraying, but I guess it can run a framing nailer too...
