Editorial Reviews:

The Mantis 120-volt electric tiller with border edger is a lightweight, 3-speed tiller. It digs down 10 inches and weeds a 30-by-40-foot garden in just 20 minutes. It features one-piece die-cast gearbox and a double-insulated motor. At just 20 pounds in weight, it is easy to start and easy to operate, with the ability to cut through hard sod, compact soil or tangled weeds. Its fold-down handles and compact design make it easy to store. The tiller is backed by a 1-year warranty, and a lifetime warranty covers the tines against breakage.

Summary: Love this tiller
Comment: I love, love, love this tiller. I don't know why I waited so long to buy it. It is the perfect size for me. I received it on Friday and had already tilled two new flower beds by Sunday. I have Bermuda sod which is very evil. The tiller went right through it. I only had to stop once to remove grass from around the tines. The power is unbelievable. I don't find the extension cord to be a hindrance. I tried using a gas powered, very heavy tiller in the spring and could not manage it. The Mantis electric tiller has done everything I need it to do. I will admit that I did not put it together. A neighbor did that for me and he did complain about the directions being bad but I also know that he did not watch the dvd included with the tiller.

Summary: Mantis Tiller meets all my expectations
Comment: I purchased this tiller after reading reviews at several internet locations. The Amazon price is excellent, it costs about $50 more direct from the manufacturer (but that comes with a 1-year satisfaction guarentee).

However, I do not need that guarentee - I am satisfied already. The machine is easy to assemble with both written and video (DVD) instructions included.

The tiller is easy to operate, and surprisingly powerful. I am using it to break up dry, clay soil. I wet it the night before, and the tiller quietly and quickly pulverizes the soil, making it easy to work, amend and prepare for new landscaping. The kickstand is handy, if a little wobbly.

I wanted an electric tiller, because I do not like dealing with the hassle of gasoline (storage, starting, maintenance). The electric tiller needs a power cord, is quiet and clean (no smell).

Mantis provides excellend product support. I submitted a few email inquiries, and a representative responded within a day with clear, concise answers to my questions.

This product might cost more than competing electric tillers, but I think the money is well spent. I am very happy with the purchase. I enthusiastically recommend this product!

The Mantis factory is located in Pennsylvania, so I think it is made in the US.

Summary: Works as described and advertised.
Comment: I am pleased to say after an afternoon working with the tiller that it works as demonstrated and advertised, despite my initial concerns and skepticism. The manufacturer's website is short on product detail but long on hype and testimonials. I feared the worst.

Assembly was easy amd painless. If you don't care to read the product manual, take the moment to watch the enclosed DVD. The kickstand proved a little difficult to install. There is very limited clearance under the motor housing to properly tighten the 2 mounting bolts. You'll need a 3/8" offset box-end wrench to install it at its proper location. I didn't have one on hand, and had to install it farther out to allow room for the ratchet head. This pinches the lower handles to a narrower angle, and so places a little strain on the upper handle assembly but does not otherwise hinder function. The extra tension on the palm nuts might actually help prevent them from vibrating loose.

The afternoon's project was a 12x15 foot courtyard, long overgrown with weeds, and the dirt not disturbed in over 10 years. The effort level was reasonable even in the mid-day sun and high-80's temperature and humidity. The best advice I can give is to let the machine do the work. You'll still need to put in some muscle to hold it back and guide it where it needs to go. Again, not at all unreasonable. I wasn't expecting truly effortless, since it didn't come with an air-conditioned cab.

Those who suffer mild red-green color blindness should probably consider immediately getting an extension cord with a color other than orange. I replaced my newly nicked up extension cord with a bright yellow one. Blue would also have enough contrast in the green overgrowth to help avoid mishap. I'll close with this thought: power cords don't mix well with brush cutting or ground thrashing equipment. It's a toss up right now whether the convenience of not having to pull a starter cord outweighs the ongoing attention needed to keep the power cord clear of the work area. The electric tiller sure is quiet, though. Not needing hearing protection also weighs in favor of electric.

Summary: back-saver!
Comment: This tiller is the best new toy I've had in a long time! It came in record time, was very easy to figure out, and then turned out to be far better than advertised! The part of gardening I hated was preparing the land, as ours is full of big, tough roots and lots of stones. With the new tiller, I made a new garden in the middle of the lawn in a couple of hours! The grass is ridiculously matted, and this thing went right through. Roots and rocks don't phase it, so if anything, you have to be careful just so you don't push it too hard. I'm very pleased with the company and with the machine, and am considering the aerator attachment already. But first, I'll see if I can get the border part to work better - I think this may take more arm strength to keep the machine straight than I have! Then again, it may well be our matted yard!

Great product - I highly recommend it!
