Customer Rating: Summary: frigidaire Comment: Second (replacement) unit is a great bargain for the price. It's a energy star room air conditioner that works great in my backyard workshop. It was easy to install and cost so little I wonder how they do it. Customer Rating: Summary: Good Value for the Price Comment: We purchased two Frigidaire (FAA065P7A) units following the reviews from Amazon, Epinions, and a few other sites. The unit received favorable reviews from Consumer Reports in both 2007 and 2008.
The unit was not easy to install, but that is more or less a result of our windows/frames and not necessarily the unit. Note the unit is rather heavy and ease of instillation requires the assistance of two people (preferably).
There is a slight slushing sound from time to time but nothing excessive (it has been very humid lately in NY). The energy saver mode is great and the start-up of the compressor is not obnoxious (an especially nice feature during the night). We sleep with the fan on low which makes/generate some noise - the unit is under $200, one cannot expect pristine tranquility - but it was not disruptive. I would not qualify myself as a light sleeper, but I am easily woken; I was able to fall asleep and remain asleep throughout the night with the fan on low. In the energy saver mode, the fans cycle off and on once the programmed temperature is reached and the compressor will resume once the ambient temperature goes above the programmed temperature setting. Since we kept our door closed, I find it gets stuffy when the fan stops running - you may want to leave your door ajar just a light to help keep a little air circulating.
The fan on high is not as loud/disruptive as expected (though this is my first window unit, so I have no point of reference), especially given some of the reviews posted on Amazon; nonetheless, it may be a little too intrusive for light sleepers.
Just a note about merchants selling this product - we ordered our two units from Allergy Be Gone since they are located in Brooklyn and we live in northern Manhattan. I would never recommend their services to anyone! Only one of the two units was delivered and now I must spent another full day waiting from the second unit to be delivered. Customer service reps were exceedingly rude and I've been waiting for several days now for a response from one of the managers. My first call was neutral, during my second call - since the promised return call from the manager never came through - was atrocious, I was transfered mid-sentence and had no idea what happened or who's voice mail I had been sent to. My third call was mush better...but still no resolution. Perhaps small transactions with this merchant are adequate but the cheaper prices of their advertised AC units will cost us more in the end - we never calculated on an additional day of lost work time/pay...something to think out. I have reviewed their profile on the BBB website and it seems a majority of customer complaints concern delivery - please think twice before buying any large products from Allergy Be Gone - we deeply regret our decision to do so! Customer Rating: Summary: Makes a good doorstop Comment: It worked alright for the first two months or so. My second summer it got less and less cooler. Now it will knock about 5 degrees off the outside temp. I contacted the service dept and it is past one year, so if I want it fixed (the sealed system is supposed to be covered) I have to pay a 88 dollar service fee. In other words it's going in the trash where it belongs. Customer Rating: Summary: Frigidaire air conditioner Comment: Quality and apperance of airconditioner seems good. Packing in box allowed the retaining rail to be bent on on both units which I bought. Otherwise it seems to work fine and was a good buy. Remote control is nice. Customer Rating: Summary: Upgrade Just a Little for a Lot Comment: This is my second Frigidaire. I also own a FAA086P7A6 unit (8000 BTU) that I purchased in 2005. Here is my current setup: I have about 415 square feet to cool. It's a one bed room + living room + kitchen & small bath in a Brooklyn "railroad" apartment (narrow but long). The kitchen is separated from the bedroom and living room (which have an open archway separating them) by a tightly sealed door.
I assigned the bedroom + living room (about 300 sq. feet) to the 8000 BTU unit and the 115 square foot kitchen to the a/c for sale on this page, the 6000 BTU FAA065P7A. Long story short: This unit can't cool a 115 sq. ft. kitchen despite claiming right on the box that it can cool a 216 sq. ft. room (I know an adjustment has to be made since it's a kitchen). I'm not baking in the kitchen either. The only appliance that is generating some heat in there would be the refrigerator, but that's pretty minimal. In contrast, the 8000 BTU is able to bring the other two rooms to ice cold temperatures.
The big difference in my opinion is the airflow. The 8000 BTU unit can, when it goes to full force, push out an amazing windstorm, while this 6000 BTU unit's high setting is at most comparable to the larger unit's medium setting.
For $20 more you also get: A better automatic fan control and a temperature-aware remote that sends the "real" temperature from across the room.
This unit simply doesn't come anywhere close to that of it's slightly bigger brothers. I highly recommending the $20 or so more.
