A powerful and sleek multimedia and messaging phone, the Samsung Glyde for Verizon boasts a robust feature-set, an innovative and colorful touchscreen, and full QWERTY keyboard. The 2.8-inch advanced touchscreen offers a tactile response as you tap onscreen buttons, and the slide-out QWERTY makes it easy to stay in contact via text and instant messaging. It's compatible with Verizon's V Cast Music Service, which enables you to purchase songs through your phone and download them via Verizon's fast EV-DO data network. You'll also stay on course thanks to the VZ Navigator GPS turn-by-turn direction service. Other features include a 2.0-megapixel camera, microSD memory expansion (up to 8 GB), Bluetooth connectivity for both communication headsets and stereo headphones, and up to 3.5 hours of talk time.
The 2.8-inch display doubles as a state–of–the–art interactive touch pad for more user–friendly navigation. | Verizon Service Options With support for the EV-DO high-speed data standard, you'll enjoy fast access to the Internet and Verizon's multimedia services (additional charges applicable), with average download speeds ranging from 400 to 700 Kbps and peak rates up to 2 Mbps. (Learn more about where EV-DO coverage is offered.) The V Cast Music service enables you to download songs instantly to your phone, or purchase music through your PC and transfer the files to your phone. If purchased from your phone, you'll receive two copies of the song: a Windows Media Audio Pro Plus format at 64Kbps stereo is sent to your phone, and a Windows Media Audio 9 format at 160Kbps stereo is sent to your account in the V CAST Music online store for downloading to your PC. V Cast Music offers nearly 2 million songs, with more being added all the time. The V Cast Video service enables you to stream or download video clips to your phone from a variety of news, entertainment, sports, and weather channels, including CNN, ABC News, E!, CBS Sports, The Weather Channel, and VH1. Getting on the Internet is easy using Verizon's Mobile Web 2.0 package, which allows you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. Verizon's Get It Now wireless download service is also fully compatible with this phone. This pay-per-download service features application downloads, games and productivity tools. You can also personalize your handset with ringtone downloads using the Get It Now service. With this GPS-enabled phone, you'll be able to access Verizon's VZ Navigator service (additional charges applicable) for voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions, heads-up alerts, local search of nearly 14 million points of interest in the US (such as landmarks, restaurants and ATMs), and detailed color maps.
With one quick slide, enjoy a large QWERTY keyboard to text or IM friends with lightening speed. | Phone Features The combination touchscreen, slider keyboard design of the Samsung Glyde provides a variety of ways of interacting with the phone's features. The large touch-enabled LCD measures 2.8 inches vertically and has a 240 x 440-pixel resolution and support for 262K colors. The front of the chassis has a single button (much like another, often talked about touchscreen phone), and the phone offers most of its controls via the touchscreen--which provides adjustable haptic vibrating feedback, so you know when you've pressed a button. The front of the Glyde's face slides open from the left side of the phone and it's easy to open and close with just one hand. When the keyboard is opened, the display automatically changes to landscape orientation. The keyboard offers no dedicated numbers, so you'll do your dialing via the numeric keypad that appears on the or touchscreen. The Glyde can store up to 500 contacts, with each entry able to store five phone numbers, two email addresses, notes, and a picture ID. It's compatible with saving contacts to groups and pairing contacts with a ringtone (polyphonic or real music ringer). The phone has a 45 MB internal memory, which is expandable via optional microSD memory cards (up to 8 GB in size). It also provides speaker-independent voice activated commands, including dial, menu readout, text message readout, and call announcement. A speakerphone means you can easily talk hands-free, while Bluetooth (version 1.2) allows you to use your favorite wireless headset. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. It also includes profiles for printing images directly to printers, dial-up networking, and sending vCard and vCalendar items to other phones. The 2-megapixel camera has six resolution modes for still photos (from 1600 x 1200 for printing to 176 x 144 pixels for sending via MMS). It features a 9x digital zoom, an integrated flash, self-timer, multi-shot mode, and customizable settings for brightness and white balance. The camera can also capture video with sound and it offers two resolution settings (320 x 240 and 176 x 144 pixels). You can shoot for up to 30 seconds for sending or as long as you have space on your optional memory card. You can easily add new music to your collection while on the go from Verizon's V Cast Music service and listen to them on the integrated digital audio player, which offers compatibility with MP3, WMA, AAC/AAC+ file formats. You can sync your tunes from your PC (Windows Media Player 11 or higher), as well as create and manage playlists right on the phone. The enV2 can also play video clips from Verizon's V Cast Video service, and ti's compatible with WMV, MP4, 3GP, and 3G2 formats.
The Glyde weighs 4.2 ounces. | The Glyde has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging, too, with support for sending and receiving text, picture, and video messages as well as mobile instant messaging (IM). There's also a complete e-mail client on the device for POP- and IMAP-based accounts. And of course, the QWERTY keyboard makes it a snap to type your messages. The Glyde ships with a number of handy tools, including a calendar and a voice memo application. An alarm clock and calculator are also included. The Glyde supports V Cast 3-D games, as well as other 2-D-based games, which are available from Verizon's Get It Now service. Customer Rating: Summary: First week - not so bad Comment: I've read all of the reviews and seen demos of the phone on CNet and other sites. I have to say after my first week i'm still impressed with the phone. I've never owned a phone with a touch screen, always been a flip guy but wanted to give it a try without breaking the bank. I know the iPhone and other products are rated higher but this to me is a decent starter. The touch interface has worked almost 99% pefectly. It takes a lot of getting used to, and having greasy fingers makes it nearly impossible to use. Is this the same case for other type of phones? The shortcuts menu is a little lame. I'd rather have access to those items direclty on the main touch screen. When in a call the phone locks it's touch screen, i'm already a pro at clicking the button to unlocking and moving around during a call. yes it's annoying but at least it works. I'm not huge into browsing the web and getting all my email on the phone. It works but if I wanted to do it 24x7 i'd get a blackberry. SMS and the keypad work great. Photo and video taking are also easy, the camera seems to lag a little when you click the button, again it just takes getting used to. Overall like i said i'm impressed. Hoepfully it'll keep working.
Customer Rating: Summary: Such a disappointment! Comment: All I had was problems with this phone after the first week of having it. The phone started freezing and I would have to shut it off and back on again. I would try to push the dial pad button and the bottom row of shortcut keys would get pressed somehow. I would try to send a text message and it would hit cancel. The worst was when I was on the phone with my college and I had to enter in an extension and it wouldn't let me push the right buttons. I had to deal with trying over and over again for 45 mins until I almost through the phone out the window. I finally used my friends cell phone to call Verizon and demand an upgrade. They gave me a deal on the DARE and I am so happy to be rid of that stupid phone.
Do yourselves a favor and do not buy this phone. It seems all great the first week and then the problems set in. I have the Dare now and I love it. The touch screen is soooo much better than the glyde.
Customer Rating: Summary: Plain and Simple: The Worse Phone Ever Comment: This is by far the worse phone I have ever owned in my entire life. I regret ever purchasing this phone. I've had this phone for 5 months now and I went to the Verizon store yesterday to get a software update in hopes that the touch screen would work again and after the update it only took five minutes of using the phone for it to act up again. The phone sucks, I hate it. It freezes up CONSTANTLY and it's so annoying. It's a pain to text message people and it's a pain to hang up the phone. There are so many negatives that I've read other people's comments and I am not going to repeat them again but I highly DO NOT recommend this phone. I wish I got the Voyager by LG it's a 100 times better. I got the Glyde out of being stubborn to prove to my wife that the there are better phones out there besides her Voyager. In fact, I am jealous of her Voyager. I love it, I wish I had it. Do not buy this phone!!
Negatives: Freezes up constantly (few times a day), cheesy ring tones, messaging is a pain, dialing is a pain, the dial pad is impossible to use, etc. etc. etc. and read other reviews!
Customer Rating: Summary: Love the size and features, but the touch screen is making it unusable Comment: I've had this phone for about 10 weeks and I'm really getting frustrated with it. I bought it based on the size and features and am very happy with those aspects of the phone.
However, the touch screen frustrates more and more each day and I'm going to take it back to the Verizon store to see what they can do. It works for a while, but after you press a few buttons the screen will stop responding and when I finally get it back to the main screen it will display menu at the bottom of the screen no matter what part of the screen I touch. The only way to get it to stop doing that is to cycle power on it. It will be OK for a little while, but then the same problem starts.
I've also noticed that the lock mechanism seems to have a mind of its own. No matter whether I activate or deactivate it seems to always be in lock mode. I've sort of learned to live with that and would even forgive it if the touch screen worked. However, the touch screen is making the phone simply unusable. It's just not reasonable to have to cycle the power almost every time you try to use it.
If you're considering this model, I'd recommend looking at others. Having said that, I can also say that if Samsung were to come up with a reliable fix for this problem, I'd be very happy to keep the phone.
Customer Rating: Summary: Highly Disappointed Comment: Was excited to receive my phone. Technology seems amazing but it goes down hill from there. Texting is great, qwerty key pad a plus. But phone freezes up constantly. Sometimes message is sent the minute you hit the send button, other times you have to press 3 or 4 times for it to respond. Answering is very cumbersome especially when driving, everything is 2-3 step process, press unlock button and then answer, press home button, then unlock, then end button to end call. Suffered with it for a week now and am returning tomorrow for the envy 2.
